We visited Ooty during Pooja holidays 2018 and it was our dream to travel in the Toy train. We had seen it in many movies. But when we enquired, everyone discouraged us telling U won't get the ticket. So we went directly to the station and lucky to get tickets. It is a 1 hr 15 minutes trip to Conoor.

Time Table

The station name is Udagamandalam. Here is the present time table as displayed at the railway station. Train runs from here to Coonoor and one trip to Mettupalayam. 

Tickets

Tickets are issued from the counter for the Coonoor and mettupalayam passenger. Also there is online booking for few seats of Mettupalayam trip. There is a time schedule for issuing the tickets. It is shown in the photo below.

Tips to get Ticket

Reach the station 1 hour before the ticket issuing time and stand in the Que. Only 4 tickets will be issued for a person in Que. There will be long que always. 

If not getting ticket, don't get disappointed, Wait in Que.

We noticed that when train is fully boarded to seating capacity, they are issuing standing tickets. You won't get seat but can stand and travel. On the day of our travel standing tickets were issued.

Boarding the train

There is a unique system of boarding the train. Benches are available in full length of the platform and need to sit in in Que. There is a board showing starting of the Que. In-fact it starts at the backside row of the  bench. When train comes they open the bogie one by one once filled. This is a good system and no pull and push for boarding

Tips for Travel

The seats and the trip is not comfortable. It is real toy type and congested. Sit on the right side seats when going down towards Coonoor as this gives better view. On left side there is no view till half distance. After half distance view is on left side but it is flat terrain. So while going up from Coonoor sit on left side.

No faclities inside

Unlike other passenger trains, there is no toilet or washbasin inside train. Use above facilities at stations. Train Inside looks like bus interior. Closely packed seats. No luxury.
